Part-time graduate course
A European course of studies run in cooperation between German-speaking universities
The graduate course in "Community development and local economics" qualifies students for activities in practical development, research and vocational training in the fields of community development and local economics.
The course provides relevant analytical and operational knowledge as a basis for the design and implementation of integrated socio-geographical approaches and independent local economic solutions in socially and economically disadvantaged urban and rural areas in particular.
This is an interdisciplinary course focussing on the interfaces between theories and operating areas within the field of sustainable social, economic, political and ecological development (Community Development).
The course is designed on a part-time basis and covers six semesters.

Labour market perspectives
Enabling, socio-geographical research and development and the promotion of local economies are becoming increasingly significant as responses to the complex problems of economic and technological structural change and its consequences in urban and rural crisis regions.
Professionals working in community development are active in planning, management, coordination and research within the participative processes of socio-geographical transformation and sustainable development.
Areas of activity are to be found in the areas of community work, local social policy, social housing, international development work, the creation and running of organisations in the "Third Sector", local labour market and commercial policy, community economics, neighbourhood management and social urban and regional development.
The focus is on the democratic involvement of disadvantaged groups in particular and the strengthening of the civil society.

Lecturers
Well-known economists, human science experts, natural scientists and social scientists from Germany and the rest of Europe with experience in the practical development of and training and research in the area of sustainable local development will be involved in this course.
The course will be taught mainly in German.

Target group
The course is aimed at graduates from courses in social work and other courses which have a logical connection with the goals of the master\'s course and its areas of activity and research, such as sociology, scientific and social geography, town and country planning, cultural sciences, urban development, educational sciences and political economics.

Admission requirements
Participation in this course requires a degree from a University or University of Applied Sciences.
One year of professional practice after the completion of the first degree is required for this course.
Admission is on the basis of a written application and an interview to determine suitability.

A maximum of 25 students will be admitted each time.

Course structure/module leaders
The course consists of four thematic modules and a research methodology module which are offered in the first four semesters in intensive seminars and research workshops.

1. Scientific methods of accessing the area of activity and research
(Module leader: Prof. Dr. Susanne Elsen, Munich)
2. Political, legal and social structures and players in the community
(Module leader: Prof. Dr. Tilo Klöck, Munich)
3. Enablement, participation, self-help and self-organisation in the context of community development, neighbourhood management and local economics
(Module leader: Prof. Dr. Günter Rausch, Freiburg)
4. The design and management of projects and enterprises in the community
(Module leader: Dr. Burghard Flieger, Freiburg)
5. Research workshops and independent research practice (Module leaders: Prof. Dr. Isidor Wallimann, Basel and Prof. Dr. Matthias Drilling)


Examination regulations
The study, examination and admission regulations are based on the requirements laid down by the Bavarian State Ministry for Science, Research and Art. The Master\'s Degree is granted by the Munich University of Applied Sciences.

Access to Doctorate (PhD)
Suitable graduates of the master\'s course will be given access to the possibility of continuing on to doctorate level.

The course is accredited in accordance with the recommendations of the German Conference of Ministers of Culture. Accreditation at European level is planned.

6,000€
Additional costs for accommodation, food and drink, travel for the intensive seminars.

Enrolment
Participants will be enrolled as students at the Munich University of Applied Sciences for the duration of the course.
